High school can seem confusing, but, once a Personalized Education or Graudation Plan has been laid out with the goals of the parents and students as the guides, it becomes manageable. Students should have a graduation plan because it provides a clear roadmap that reduces stress, aligns daily coursework with long-term goals and prevents missing credits, or other requirements needed to pursue their next academic goal. Every student enrolled in FOFCAI receives a full academic planning session with the Guidance Office. In addition, they have access to their guidance counselor all year for updates and changes.

These same services are also available to non FOFCAI students because every student benefits from a personalized academic or graduation plan.

The FOFCAI Guidance Office has over thirty years experience guiding students through the high school years so that they can meet the requirements to earn an accredited High School Diploma and enter the next phase of their life. (College, Technical Scool, Military, etc.)

Highlights of what the FOFCAI counselor helps with:

• We start with an overview of the graduation track options. (Standard Diploma, College Prep Designation, and Career Technical Pathway.

• Then we begin building an Individualized Graduation Plan based on the goals of the student/family and update it annually.

• With the Individualized Graduation Plan outlined, we can move on to choosing curriculum and format options for the courses and credits needed to graduate. This includes Physical Textbooks, Virtual Options, Part-time Classroom or Co-op classes and Dual Enrollment options, if appropriate. (Dual Enrollment may include college classes or technical college classes in person or on-line.)

• Testing Options and Test Prep will also be reviewed based on what tests or entrance exams may be required for the pathway chosen.

• Scholarship Applications for those planning post high school academics. (Primarily, FOFCAI will focus on the Florida Bright Futures Scholarships, FAS, FMS, GSV and GSC, but will provide resources for additional scholarship opportunities)

• Official Accredited Transcripts are provided to all FOFCAI students. Non students (for which we serve as the Guidance Office) are provided a transcript template with the appropriate Florida course code numbers and names appropriate to the courses planned.

• FOFCAI has a Commencement Program (Graduation) in May of each year for graduating Seniors. Homeschoolers are welcome to participate in the program if there is space available.

Next Steps:

If the student has already earned some high school credits, the first step is to obtain a copy of his/her transcript. If the student has been homeschooled, please provide as detailed a list of curriculum used as possible, including grades and an end-of-year evaluation, so we can determine what credits the student may have earned. Then, a meeting with the guidance counselor will produce an exact plan of courses completed, in progress, and required for graduation.

The Guidance Office is open on Monday through Friday from 10 to 4 throughout the school year. Additional days and times (including evening appointments) are available both in person at the Lakeland office and via a Zoom Video Conference. The school's summer break is the last week of June and the first week of July. To allow the proper amount of time to plan for the coming year, it's best to call or email and schedule an appointment.
