FOFCAI Home-Based Program Details
The Family is the First School, Parents the First Teachers
Catholic Social Teaching
The above quote is from the end of a more detailed concept:
It is within the family where children are raised and formed as human beings. The parental role in this human formation is governed by love, a love which places itself "at the service of children to draw forth from them ("e-ducere") the best that is in them" and which "finds its fullest expression precisely in the task of educating." (Compendium, No 239) The Family is the "First School, Parents the First Teachers."
Home-Based Program:
Whether you call it "Homeschool, Distance Learning or, as we describe it, Parent Directed Education", the concept simply builds on the principle that the "Family is the First School" with the belief that the family has the best interest of the student at heart, knows the child better than a stranger, and has the bibilical mandate to "raise children", so they should remain the architect of the young person's educational plans.
Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:6
This program allows a family to build a custom academic plan for a student from a wide range of options. For many, that will mean that Mom and Dad are the primary teachers in much the same way a classroom teacher works with students in a classroom. The family partners with FOFCAI to ensure that the curriculm used meets the academic standards for the subject, grade level or credit that is appropriate for the student(s). Often that course work is completed at home, and the appropriate formative and summative assessments are recorded in the school's Student Management System by the Parent/Teacher. Additional courses may be campus based, on-line or virtual classes where the student has a teacher other than the parent. (See the Classroom and Blended options for more details.) A large percentage of our students in grades 10 - 12 take Dual Enrollment courses offered by colleges, and they earn both high school and college credit at the same time. In essence, the goal is to develop a custom academic plan, designed to meet the unique needs of a specific student.
If you have been directing the education of your children for many years, you may already have a good idea of what works best for your student, and the planning part is more about ensuring that the required credits for high school graduation are met. If you are new to "Parent Directed Education", then beginning with a review of the many curriculum and course delivery options available to you might be the place to start. This is why we attempt to provide as many details and links to quality education options as possible on this site. Regardless of what step in the process you are on, our goal is to provide guidance and documentation for the academic accomplishments of your student(s).
The base tuition for the "Parent Directed - School Verified Program (which does not include curriculum) has two fees:
Family Registration Fee: $125
Student Tuition (Annual): $550 for the first student in a family
Each additional in the same family: $475
Families may combine the Home-Based Program with another component, such as a live Algebra class under the Blended/Hybrid Component system, which would incur additional costs for the program and required textbooks.
